Anxiety is a natural emotion that motivates us to take necessary precautions. However, some people are plagued by this feeling even when there is no likely threat.   1. Engage in Peaceful Activities: To relax you may consider one of the following:
    • Yoga
    • Meditation
    • Massage Therapy
    • Breathing Exercises
  2. Designate a Worry Period: If you cannot stop worrying about everything, you may want to try postponing your anxious thoughts. As the day progresses, make a note about every worry that pops into your head. After making the note, try not to think about it until your designated worry period. By the time you go through the list, some of the items may no longer concern you. Even if you are still concerned, at least you didn’t spend the entire day harping on them.
  3. Remove Alcohol & Caffeine from Your Diet: These substances tend to make it harder to learn how to deal with anxiety because they contribute to panic attacks.
  4. Counting: Slowly count to ten or twenty and repeat until you feel better.
  5. Don’t Aim for Perfection: No one is perfect. If you set goals at an unobtainable level, you will never be satisfied by your success. If your goal is to be perfect, you will stress yourself out trying to achieve an impossible goal.
  6. Think Analytically and Objectively: Part of learning how to deal with anxiety is learning how to combat your anxious thoughts. Cognitive distortions are thought patterns that cause you to think situations are worse than they are. When you begin to worry, write down every particular thing that concerns you. Through research, observation and objective thinking you might find out the probability of your fears is much lower than you thought.
  7. Get help: If your brain is programmed to worry about the improbable, it is hard to change your thought patterns alone. Counseling is very helpful.
